A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the odds had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
