The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.
He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
