No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
