Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
